Before Halloween became focused on candy and costumes, it was associated with love and fortune-telling. In 18th- and 19th-century Britain and America, Halloween night was a time when young people tried to divine the identity of their future spouses. One popular method was to peel an apple in one long strip and toss it over the shoulder—if it landed in the shape of a letter, that was said to be the first letter of your future lover’s name. Another tradition involved eating a salty oatcake before bed and hoping to dream of your true love bringing you water. Women would also hang wet sheets in front of a fire, expecting to see their future husband's image in the smoke. These rituals were a blend of folklore, superstition, and social fun, revealing that Halloween was not always about scares—it once carried the same romantic weight as Valentine’s Day in certain communities.
